Groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of 10 new homes designed to support independence and community for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
On Friday, February 20, My Forever Home and the Charles Lea Center joined partners and community members in Smithfield, N.C., to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new inclusive housing community that will provide 10 homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The homes will be constructed by Harbinger Homes of Four Oaks and funded through Scioto Properties. The project became possible through the generous donation of the land by Floyd Development, whose support helped turn the vision of this community into reality.
The Charles Lea Center was invited to join the initiative to provide supportive services and technology that will help residents live as independently and successfully as possible within the community.
Rent for the homes will be income-based, ensuring accessibility for individuals across a wide range of economic backgrounds and supporting a more inclusive living environment.
Beyond housing, the partners involved in the project are committed to creating a strong sense of community. Plans include monthly activities designed to encourage friendships and connection among residents, such as shared meals, holiday gatherings, and other opportunities to build meaningful relationships.
This development represents an important step forward in expanding housing options and fostering inclusive communities where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live, connect, and thrive.
